The bat family Pteropidae contains the largest bats with a wingspan approaching 6 feet and weighing over 1.2kgs. Despite their impressive size these bats feed only on fruit and nectar. Lyle's flying fox is found throughout Thailand and many roosts are within the grounds of Buddist temples. Ang Thong province is home to several camps containing hundreds of bats; its fascinating to watch there daytime behaviour as they groom, mate, rest and keep themselves cool by using their huge wings as fans. As dusk falls noise within the bat camp escalates as the bats begin to leave, flying out from the Buddist temple with the hypnotic sounds of monks chanting in the background.
